Three Months of Centering BIPOC Voices: A Reading and Discussion Group

Our November discussion on Saturday the 13th at 3:30 PM invites us to respond to The Dragons, The Giant, The Women by Wayetu Moore. Moore recounts her experiences leaving revolution torn Liberia and coming to the United States where she experienced layers of racism.

On December 11 we’ll be discussing Ida B – The Queen. The book “tells the awe-inspiring story of an pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life, and of the Black experience.”

We’ll start the New Year off right with the book selected as the UU Read for the year. Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment by Zach Norris. Beacon Press writes: “In a time when the most powerful institutions in the United States are embracing the repressive and racist systems that keep many communities struggling and in fear, we need to reimagine what safety means. Community leader and lawyer Zach Norris lays out a radical way to shift the conversation about public safety away from fear and punishment and toward growth and support systems for our families and communities. In order to truly be safe, we are going to have to dismantle our mentality of Us vs. Them. By bridging the divides and building relationships with one another, we can dedicate ourselves to strategic, smart investments—meaning resources directed toward our stability and well-being, like healthcare and housing, education and living-wage jobs. This is where real safety begins.”

The discussion for this book is scheduled for Saturday, January 8, at 3:30 PM. We hope that members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee will join us for every discussion, but especially for Zach Norris’ volume in January so we can expand the circle of UU’s who’ve thought about new avenues to safety.

All of our books are available in paper, ebook and audible versions to enhance accessibility. If you wish to join one of the Second Saturday discussions contact Robin Gray, (email available in the church directory and from the office).

Special Newcomer/Guest Break-out Room Every Sunday After the Service

Newcomers and other guests, whether you have attended one virtual service or many, please join us in a special break-out room any Sunday during the social time following the service. You are welcome to participate in this break-out room more than once. It will be an opportunity for you to get to know us and us to get to know you. You can also share about what brought you to UUCT and ask questions you might have. And if you would rather just participate in one of the general break-out rooms during social time, you are always invited to do so. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the break-out room or about the church, please email: welcome@uutallahassee.org

Mindful Meditation

You are welcome to join us every Sunday from 1 PM to 2:00 PM in person at the UUCT campus (Room L) or via Zoom. We are a community of meditators who come together for a chance to center ourselves with calm and focus. Each week a member of the group leads the meditation, drawing from a variety of Buddhist thought. Our usual practice starts with a guided meditation or a passage reading while seated, followed by a walking meditation, then finishing with a silent meditation. At the conclusion, we share our experiences with each other.

Whether you are new or seasoned to the practice of meditation, all are welcome. Please email Ardenkelly@yahoo.com for the Zoom link invitation to be sent to you every Saturday.

Arden Kelly is a Director & Teaching Artist Acting/Voice & Speech/Voiceover/Singer pursuing a Masters in London.

Singing Meditation

Singing Meditation is on an alternating Tuesday/Thursday rotation schedule.  Our next gathering will be Tuesday, November 16 from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM in person at the UUCT campus or via Zoom. Use the following link to join our zoom:  https://us06web.zoom.us/j/319800919   Meeting ID: 319 800 919

UU Explorations

UU Explorations is a special Small Group Ministry for those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist. This is a sharing and listening circle about topics that relate to the theme: What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? It is an opportunity to get to know others on a deeper level and reflect together on important topics and concepts in Unitarian Universalism. At each gathering, we: check in with each other on how our lives are going, share our thoughts on one of twelve topics, simply listen to one another, and then share any further reflections we have. The circle is specifically not a class or discussion group.

UU Explorations meets every 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM via Zoom. For more information, the current readings, and Zoom details contact Trudy Deyle.  The next gathering will be held Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 PM. The topic will be “Freedom and Interconnection in UUism: For Individuals and For Congregations”.  We will meet the second Tuesday in December.
