Voting for Our Lives: Update

By Susan Fleming

We are unstoppable!

A group of over thirty UUs and friends have sent out a total of 2275 cards to disenfranchised voters.  We  met our goal of 2020 cards and we kept going strong. It’s an easy, fun, and safe from home way to counteract voter suppression.

We have written and mailed to people in Arizona, Florida, and Texas encouraging them to register and vote.   Next up is writing to purged voters in Georgia. By working primarily with an organization “Reclaim Our Vote” to obtain cards, scripts and addresses. Their mission is reaching people of color who have been suppressed in the past.

Find the time this weekend  to watch the film “Suppressed: the Fight to Vote”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03DGjnIkTdI if you haven’t already. Then contact Susan Fleming safleming02@msn.com  or Janet Temkin janet.temkin@gmail.com to get involved. If you’d like more suggestions on how to help, ask to join our mailing list UU Votes for Justice.

Sometimes we want to throw up our hands and say, “What can we do?” when overwhelmed by the devious methods powerful people go to get their way to keep people out.  Instead take action to offset their methods by  bringing people in.  Postcarding is one way we can help from home, along with phone banking and texting.

Centering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Voices: A UUCT Book Group

By Robin Gray

The first two books have been selected and a regular meeting day and time chosen. Centering BIPOC Voices will meet on the second Saturday of the month at 3:30 p.m.

September’s book is How to be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi. In October the book under discussion will be The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide by Zerlina Maxwell.

The books were selected by people attending a planning meeting for the book group. In coming months the whole group will be choosing and announcing selections two months in advance to allow people plenty of time to get the book and read it.

Members and friends of UUCT are always be welcome to join the group — as long as they’ve read the book. To join the discussion on September 12 at 3:30 p.m. and receive more information about the group contact Robin Gray (robingray021@gmail.com).
