August 3   A Novel Approach

Fiction sometimes reveals truths that simple facts might obfuscate.  We’ll look at the truths revealed by a sampling of the minister’s summer reading.  You can join the conversation, if you’ve read a novel that taught you something about life.  We’ll also dedicate the Executive Board to their leadership tasks for our congregation before they embark on an afternoon of reviewing leadership accomplishments from the 2007-2008 church year.

Guest Musician:  Valarie Howington

August 10   Find Us and You Shall Seek

This slogan attracts attention in magazines, and brings the curious to our congregations.  Where have we come in our search since entering a UU church?  What leads us on the journey?  Will there ever be an end to our seeking?

Rev. Robin Gray
Guest Musician:  Carrie Hamby

Second Sunday Potluck:  Visitors are welcome to join us, whether or not you bring a dish to share!

August 17   Strained Conversations

There can be wisdom in folk tales, ancient or modern.  The briefest of stories will lead us into shared reflection on the words and thoughts we choose to share with one another.

Rev. Robin Gray
Guest Musician:  Carrie Hamby

August 24   Save the People, Save the Planet

The DVD of the Ware Lecture from Van Jones, given at the 2008 Unitarian Universalist General Assembly in June, will be shown twice at UUCT prior to the service.  Mr. Jones’ inspiring speech can move us all to think about how UUCT can aide the work of eco-justice.  Bring your ideas and enthusiasm - together we can build a future worthy of our brightest dreams.

Rev. Robin Gray

More details:  Activist and organizer Van Jones has initiated many justice-seeking programs, including one that supports training formerly incarcerated persons for viable careers in green industries. He advocates moving unemployed people into new, green jobs rather than old industries. Our church’s ecology and justice interests lend themselves to a careful consideration of his message. The Ware Lecture will be shown and discussed on Tues., August 12 at 1:00 PM & 7:00 PM in Rm L. At the Sunday service congregants will be invited to continue the discussions begun earlier and apply their creativity to developing ways the church can become an active proponent of eco-justice.

August 31   From Thomas Merton to Tallahassee, a Spiritual Odyssey

Joan Patterson will describe the fascinating journey of discovery that led her from five years as a novice Catholic nun to the free spirit-hood of Unitarian Universalism.

Speaker:  Joan Patterson;
Lay Leader:  Kristen Eliza Coyne
