Come, come, whoever you are: girl, boy, man, woman,
parent, grandparent, child; holding various beliefs, whatever your skin
color, whatever your physical abilities, whomever you love, you are welcome
at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee. You are welcome in
this religious home.
About Your First Sunday
Visit
- Our service starts at 11:00 a.m. and lasts for an hour.
- Generally, we have music, songs, readings, a children’s
message, a time of meditation, and a sermon.
- Our minister conducts the service three times a month.
The remaining services are conducted by members of the congregation,
with a guest speaker from UUCT, the community, or out-of-town.
- For lively discussion of current social justice, environmental,
and other issues, you might want to come earlier at 9:45 a.m. and attend
our Sunday Adult Forum in Rm. L.
- Dress on Sundays is casual for both children and adults.
- We have several parking places near the sanctuary designated
for first-time visitors.
- Arrive a few minutes before the service if possible,
so you have time to stop by our visitor table just inside the sanctuary
door, make a nametag, and get settled before the service starts.
- Greeters wearing blue ribbons are available before and
after the service to answer questions or introduce you to someone who
can tell you more about a particular UUCT program or activity.
- If you have children, arrive 15-20 minutes early and
stop outside the sanctuary at our Religious Education (RE) welcome table,
where our Director of Religious Education or an RE volunteer will greet
you and let you know where your children can go.
- During the school year, pre-school and elementary-aged
children attend the beginning of the church service and leave for class
with their teachers after the children’s message. Infants and
toddlers are usually dropped off at the nursery before the service,
which is open from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., but they are also welcome
to attend the service with their parents if they are not yet ready to
be left in the nursery. Most Sundays, middle and high schoolers go straight
to youth group in Rm. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Throughout the year, we have several intergenerational
celebration services where all youth—pre-school through high school—attend
the entire service.
- After the service, we invite you to join us for coffee
and social hour. Or, on the second Sunday of each month, please stay
after the sermon as our guest for the monthly potluck. This is generally
a good time to meet our minister, on the Sundays when she is there.
- If you are a college student or young adult, be sure
to connect with our Campus Ministry Coordinator or the volunteer representative
for that Sunday. We have an active campus/young adult group, and we’d
love to tell you more about it!
- If you have any further questions before attending for
the first time, please don’t hesitate to call the church office
(385-5115). If our Office Administrator can’t answer your question,
she will direct you to the person who can.
New UU Sessions
We encourage those interested in learning more about
our church, and especially those interested in becoming members or supporting
friends, to attend our New UU sessions. These sessions are offered on
a regular basis throughout the year, usually two weeknights from 7:00
p.m – 9:00 p.m., but occasionally in a one, three-hour Sunday afternoon
session. They are co-facilitated by church members and our minister.
Participants will be introduced to Unitarian Universalism
and district, regional, and denominational activities. The history, structure,
and activities of our congregation will be covered, including how to get
involved. Participants will also have the opportunity to briefly share
their own spiritual journeys and ask our minister questions. The sessions
are a great way to connect with our minister, a couple of UUCT members,
and other newcomers who are at the same stage in UUCT involvement.
Check the membership section of our newsletter for
upcoming New UU dates. To sign-up, complete a sign-up sheet located at
the back of our sanctuary, or contact the church office by phone: 385-5115;
or email. Childcare
is available on request.
Becoming a Member or Supporting Friend
To discuss becoming a member of the church, speak with
the membership chair, the UUCT board president, or the minister. They
will try to answer any questions you might have or point you toward resources
that will.
What is required to become a member?
- Be at least 18 years old and in sympathy with the church’s
purposes and programs.
- Make a "recorded" financial contribution or
pledge, identified as being from you.
- Sign the Membership Book.
- Participate in the life of the congregation. When possible,
serve on a committee, volunteer to help with special projects, and offer
your special skills and knowledge where needed.
Membership is open to all persons regardless of race,
color, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, or national origin.
There is no creedal requirement.
Those wishing to support the church financially and
with their time, but not quite ready to become members, may choose to
become supporting friends for as short or as long a time as they feel
comfortable.
Forms for becoming either a member or supporting friend
are available from the church office or the membership chair.
The UUCT Covenant of Membership
As members of the Unitarian Universalist
Church of Tallahassee, we agree to support each other's spiritual quests
and service to others. We will help each other identify, develop, and
apply our gifts, and we will be faithful stewards and givers of time,
energy, and money. We come with open hearts and open minds, expecting
to find—and doing our part to provide—a religious community
that nurtures, unites, and empowers. This we do covenant and thus may
it be.
