After setting a blistering pace from July through November, pledge payments fell off in December. We collected just $8,755 during Christmas month. (Our pro-rated monthly target is $19,877). Still, at the halfway mark for the year, total collected pledges stand at $128,292 or 3.8% over target. Sunday collections and rental fees are lagging, but total income from all sources is 2.94% over target for the year.

Total expenses, meanwhile, stand at 2.3% under budget – this despite spot overspending in hospitality and building and grounds. Netting out income and expenses, we are $13,674 in the black for the year. This will enable us to pay the remaining half of our Annual Program Fund Dues to the UUA in January. Well done, UUCT!

Outside the operating budget, five church funds saw gains during December. They were:

• Minister’s Discretionary Fund Christmas Eve Collection . . . . $430
• Harmony Camp Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $335
• Memorial Gifts Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $100
• CCE Fund / Friction Farm Concert (net after expenses) . . . . . $117

In addition, we collected $448 in December for Refuge House.

Especially gratifying are the collections for Refuge House and the Minister’s Discretionary Fund. Our church motto is “Seek, Share, Belong.” “Share” is right where it belongs: Square in the middle of all we do.

On a sobering note, the stock market decline between October and December wiped out virtually all the preceding gains for the year in our Vanguard Endowment Fund. Still, that fund shows a healthy end-of-December balance of $729,672. The Vanguard Endowment is invested almost exclusively in index-tracking mutual funds. Over time, such funds easily beat most actively managed accounts. Our endowment is invested for the long term, so we should be philosophical about this market hiccup.
